Wednesday:

We leave Front Royal and begin our trip through the Shenandoah Valley via Skyline Parkway. Just too beautiful. It was rainy and foggy but that just made for great photos. At least I think so.

We stay one night at Loft Mountain, a National Park on Skyline Parkway. No electricity. No sleep for Jack as his anti-snoring, anti-apnea machine needs much electricity. It was a most beautiful park. Photos below of the park and Skyline Parkway through the Shenandoah Valley. There are 43 of them though so be warned. And there are more in the next posts…

Monday and Tuesday:

Left PA. Drove through Maryland, West Virginia and finally Virginia. Stayed at Front Royal. Also the same place as last trip. Bad last time, but tried to give it a second try. This turned out not to be a good idea. We woke up the next morning to find a river of sewage running under Worf. Moved to a different site on the opposite side of the RV park. Much better. Did laundry and dipped into the town of Front Royal for groceries. Front Royal, VA is the start of the Shenandoah Valley. Jack also fixed the mysterious boom sound in the bulkhead [aka; cab over the driver seat]. Lose bolts. Glad we got rid of the heavy tv because the bolts would have been impossible to get to otherwise! Ha Ha Ha.
Many more photos to come in the next posts.

Sunday:

We had such a good time at Wendi and Tom’s and we didn’t want to leave but we packed up and left Southport, Sally, Wendi, Tom, Riley, Lily and two labs: Fenway and Breagha.

It is George’s birthday and we are now off to PA, he and Nan are in Benbow, CA. Took three states to get to Pennsylvania. We stayed at Shartlesville at the Appalachian Campground. Same place as the last trip. Still weird, but not as weird as it was last time, kind of deserted and scary last time. This time, more people. More trouble with water heater, seems it is making a high pitched whine. Not a whine, anything but a whine. Oh well, eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Saturday:

Woke up late and had breakfast [thank you once again Wendi!].  Then we walked to a local school to play on the playground equipment. Found a chestnut tree with chestnuts! Then went to lunch and then a boat ride. Then out to dinner at Tomato and Basil grownup style.

Friday:

I shopped at Whole Foods, probably for the last time before California. Jack brought Worf home from the repair shop with a new water heater and we packed up and headed for Southport, CT. I drove with Sally in her car and Jack took Trixie, Worf and the Puddle Jumper. Does any of that make sense? It allowed me to take photos of Worf on the run!

Southport is about as far away from Sally as Rancho Cordova is for us. We arrived late afternoon and had a fantastic dinner of yummy fajitas. We hadn’t seen Wendi, Tom and the two girls for four years! Lily was only a month or so old. Now she is four! Both girls are just the cutest. Riley and I made patterns out of some of her blocks. See photos below.

Wendi and Tom just moved into a new home just about six weeks ago, but you wouldn’t know it. The house looks great and we stayed in the new downstairs that was created out of the basement. For those of you living west of the Sierras, a basement is a full level of a house under the house with windows and living space. Much larger than the “crawl space” we are used to, never mind the slab. For those of you living east of the Sierras, a slab is just that, cement that the foundation of the house is glued to. Not much weather to be worried about if you build a house on a slab. Photos follow.

Tuesday:

The day after I got back to RI, we picked Worf up in Tiverton where he was staying and continuing to leak. We dropped him off at the RV repair shop [again]. Hopefully he will leak for them, so we can get a new water heater and be done with it. Oh Worf.

It was great to go back to Tiverton anyway and see Sandy. We also saw Mary across the street during her school’s morning recess! What a hoot. Also, two Bernese Mountain dogs walked by and I petted them. That was a treat.

Back at Sally’s we went out for a late lunch at an Irish Pub. It was great.

Thursday:

We packed for CT and for the rest of the trip South and West.  It didn’t take as long as I thought. Sally and I went back to Tiverton to have dinner at Sandy and Chris’. Jack stayed at Sally’s. He was worried about being ready to go the next day. Anyway here are some photos, finally!

Wednesday:

Sally and I decided to celebrate our combined birthdays this year, since they are both in July. I know it is October, but why not?

We started at T’s for breakfast. Yummy Eggs Florentine. I am just loving the different accents as we cross the country. Did you know that Rhode Island people have a different accent than Massachusetts folks? Well, yes. Some of the accents make people sound like they are tough cookies or really sweet. California must sound new age-y, maybe?

Then Sally and I saw The Help. You will all be astounded when I say that I actually read the book first, since I usually say, “I read a book once, didn’t like it.” Oh ha ha. Anyway, great movie, great acting. That Sissy Spacek and Cecilie Tyson just keep acting like great actors. Both fab.

After the movie we decided to eat again and went to a great place by the water which is not hard in Rhode Island as it is mostly coast. Kind of like if the Bay Area was a separate state. Hmmmmmmm. Kind of is when you think about it. And you don’t have to think really hard.

Wish I had some photos, but I don’t. I think I was too busy enjoying myself!

September 26 – October 3, 2011: Trip to West Coast

air flight

Blue to the West and Magenta back to the East!

Monday, September 26:

I packed up a carry-on [thank you Sally], left my camera! and my computer! And flew back to the west coast for a few days to see my family and fix things with Deneb. Jack and Sally dropped me off at the Providence airport. Full body xray at security. Guess I looked shifty.

Stopped two times on the way, once in Detroit and the other in LA. The plane to Oakland from LA was delayed two hours. EEEEUUUUUUU, so I didn’t  get to Oakland ’till midnight. Lucky that my daughter was still willing to pick me up!

In the meantime, my cell phone lost some of the ability to enter certain keys so texting has been a bit hilarious as I try to use alternate words and letters to communicate. Anyone know how to fix this in a jail-breaked Droid?

Seems there will be a dearth of photos due to my being without my camera, just words.

Tuesday, September 27:

Spent the night at my daughter and niece’ house in Oakland. Went to breakfast with Gabbie at Mama Royal’s then took Gabbie to work in her car, bought some CDs at WaldenBooks and then picked up Miriam and we had lunch in Albany. Mir and I went back to her and Finn’s house and planned the Hawaii trip for them. Left Miriams in Berkeley and picked up Gabbie at Kingmans. Craft night. It was a blast. Fun Gabbie friends and some revisiting of Village People videos via Youtube.
This is also my sister Triss’ birthday.

Wednesday, September 28

Can’t remember the morning, but in the afternoon Gabbie and I drove to BART. She took the train to SF and teaching at the SF Art Academy, I took the train to Pleasant Hill. Triss picked me up in Mom’s car, then we went to lunch, then I took her car to Nan’s in Sacramento. Loved driving Mom’s car. Loved it.

Thursday, September 29

Spent Wednesday and Thursday night in Rancho. Thursday I took Joe for a walk. Nan and I had breakfast in Fair Oaks, walked around, then Nan went to the doctor’s. I stayed and worked on the Deneb situation. Nan and I had a MacNCheese dinner. Splendid as usual.

Seems our neighbor across the street has come to the rescue. Deneb is not fairing well at Julie’s with his incessant night-time yowling. [not for nothing he is called Chairman Meow]. Our Pacifica neighbor’s have a house sitter to lend. Hooray! We just have to get to Saturday when Julie will drop off the Chairman.

Friday, September 30

I left Sacramento [read: Rancho Cordova] after breakfast and after video taping a scuba guy fixing my sister and brother in law’s pool filter. [video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPc362FACFk]

I leave for Oakland. Still have TC’s car. Gabbie and I take Rosie for a walk in the Redwoods and then pick up Miriam from the Hardly Strickly Blue Grass Festival in SF. We go out to dinner at a Thai place. And then back across the bay to drop off Mir and spend the night at Gabbie’s.

Saturday, October 1

Drove to Pacifica to cement the Deneb deal with the new house sitter. Just before I got there Julie had dropped Deneb off. Looks like a great solution; wonderful guy, likes cats, seems to like Deneb. Our next door neighbor has been filling in taking care of Deneb and the yard. Thank you so much Jerry! The house is fine.

Back in Oakland with Holly and Gabbie for pizza dinner and an Arrested Development Festival.

Sunday, October 2

Brunch with my brother at Skates in Berkeley. We had a great time. Chatted for two hours!

Gabbie took me to the BART station before her bartending gig. The train ride was great to the Colloseum station, but trying to exit the train was a bit difficult as there was a Raider/Patriots game just letting out. A crush of people everywhere.

I then needed to take a bus from Colliseum BART to OAK Airport. Never seen so many people! I waited for the bus and crushed on to the rafters with everyone else going to the airport. Seems people come from all over just to see the Raiders. Guy next to me was from Vancouver, Canada. Another guy with his small son was from Portland, OR. We all became quite friendly as it became obvious we were on the Twilight Zone bus when ten minutes into the ride we were back at BART. There were shouts, “Turn here, turn here!” and eventually,”Do you know where you are going?” Seems there were so many roads blocked we had to back track to High St. to get to the freeway. Soon as the driver turned left on High everyone applauded! Then when he ran a red light to get on the freeway, there were shouts of hooray and Good Job! Took nearly an hour to make the ten minute trip. I am glad I was a little early as my flight didn’t leave until eight pm. Stopped at Chillis just past the security check. This time no full body xray.

Another 2 stop flight and this time a red-eye. LA, then to Philadelphia. Then back to Providence and the rest of the trip east!

Monday, October 3

Back in RI about 11am. Ate lunch, then did some computer stuff and then slept for a few hours. Dinner and sleep again. Red eye not so much fun.

Saturday, September 24:

Laundry day! Oh clean clothes and without quarters. Thank you Sally!

We went to the fish store again and bought lobsters to have for dinner tonight with Sandy, Chris and Mary. I had prawns. They were great, cooked on the grill!

But before dinner we walked down to the Sakonnet River just a couple of blocks from Sandy and Chris’ in Tiverton. It is called a river but is really part of the Narragansett Bay which is fed by the Atlantic. So I got to swim in the Atlantic! Photo to follow. It was a great temperature and felt great although a bit salty. Guess I have been used to the lakes and rivers. No sharks though. Whew!

Sunday, September 25:

Went on a walk in Cranston with Trixie. It was so humid. Then back to Tiverton to see the nursery where Sandy works. Bought fresh fruit at the nursery. Peaches! Yay and delicious. Melos Nursery has a flower garden and you can get fresh flowers from their garden. Things get pretty dormant in the winter around there, not like California and its’ two seasons. The east really has four seasons. Really.

photo of Narragansett Bay

Me with Jack and Mary in Narragansett Bay! Great swimming! No Hammerhead Sharks!

Photo of Narragansett Bay, Tiverton

Sandy and I inspecting ring rocks. Seems you can wish on them. I wished that we find someone to take care of Deneb! Due to a family emergency we lost our house sitter! Julie pitched in and took Deneb for a while. But he made too much noise for her roommates. No blame there.
